Back to Hotel Francés Old world charm All travelers to Guadalajara owe themselves a stay at the Frances. The 17th century architecture and accomodating staff are amazing.Don't expect oppulance in your room, just above average fare at a reasonable price. While the downstairs lobby has lost a little of it's magic when the bar was expanded some 20 years ago, take advantage of the lively patrons and the 2 for 1 happy hour. This place is situated within walking distance of many must see attractions(it's right across the street from the Government Palace and Plaza).
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Jan 25 2008 We'll return I liked just about everything about this 375 year old hotel. My only complaint was the very old elevator was broken and we had to climb 3 flights of stairs to our room. The ambiance, the friendliness of the staff, the wonderful food, and the bar made the stay memorable. On Friday night the hotel put on a Mariachi show with an absolutely incredible band and array of singers. It was a magical evening of music and people watching. The Guadalajara folks who attended were elegant and dressed beautifully. Everyone was so polite and gracious. I went to my room and changed into dressy clothes so I could join them. Sometimes we Americans forget how to dress and going to the Frances was a wakeup call. We'll go back again and we'll make sure we pack evening clothes.

Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Jun 27 2005 Real Mexico Character/Affordable We stayed there last July, after staying one night in another Hotel friends had recommended. It has a good balance of original character and modern functionality; it is well kept. The location is perfect for just parking your car and exploring the downtown historic area on foot. I liked the high ceilings, would recommend 3rd floor, to keep noise down, we even stayed on a very nice hugh suite on the 4th floor for $80. US. We are artists, Jack (former head of Cultural Affairs Austin TX) and Sabina (originally from Chihuahua City), and are planning to stay there again New Year's.
