Built between 1729 and 1755, the square is the city's central attraction, a masterpiece of Spanish Baroque architecture. Behind the impressive arches, there are numerous bars and cafés with terraces in the summer to enjoy daily city life passing by. It's an irregular square surrounded by three floors of buildings with symmetrical balconies above 88 semi-circular arches supported by solid stone pillars. The Royal Pavilion and the town hall are located here. There are decorative moldings that depict famous people who are somehow related to the city.

This fiesta on 11th May dates back to 1476 and the time of the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabel. The main attraction is the encierro (driving the bulls into pens) on horseback and the bullfights in the Plaza Mayor, which is turned into a bullring by arranging carts around the square. It's such a strong tradition that the cattle farmers in the area seem to feel morally obliged to voluntarily give their animals for the bullfights. This unusual event takes place 1.5 hour's drive from Salamanca, via Ciudad Rodrigo towards La Fregeneda. For information on buses, call +34 923 23 6717.
