This is a temple of two saints: Shakya and Amida. The cemetery at this temple, characterized by its many slopes, contains the remains of both emperors and members of the aristocracy. Besides wonderful wood paneling (fusuma), the gate houses two important cultural properties, carvings of Buddhist guardians dating to the late Heian Era. The priest Honen preached here and the temple has a portrait, capturing him relaxing after soaking in the ofuro (Japanese bath). On the fourth Sunday in May, the temple plays host to a reconstruction of a Heian-era literary card game reenacted by women in period costume. Admission: JPY500
