Originally built as a defense battlement in 1515, this tower is now a symbol of Portuguese exploration and discovery. Commissioned by King D. Manuel I, the tower showcases a fine example of fortified military architecture from the Middle Ages. It stands guard over the river Tagus. With its many terraces, it provides a breathtaking view of the river. The entrance is via a wooden bridge that traverses the river below and since 1983 it has been dubbed a global property declared by UNESCO.
