The most sumptuous of all the 18th Century follies built near Montpellier used to stand near the banks of the river Mosson to the west of the city. Built from 1728 onwards by the state treasurer, Joseph Bonnier, the folly ruled over all competitors for 30 years until the ruin of its owner. Subsequently dismantled, a soap factory was later established on the site. The grounds were finally brought by the city in 1982. Of the original folly, only the elegant Venetian style central pavilion and a long, ornate water channel has survived.
