The Main Exhibition Hall was built in 1895 in French Renaissance style and has been designated important cultural property together with the original ticket counter, the main gate and the walls--collectively named: "Former Imperial Museum of Kyoto." The core of the collection came from Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, as well as from individuals. Seventeen rooms exhibit more than 2,000 items, which are divided into three areas--crafts, fine arts (religious and secular) and history.
