Reviewed by: Marilyn Shoemaker from on Aug 19 2008 Great Experience Visited for the first time on Iditarod weekend. Despite it being probably the busiest winter weekend, service was top-notch all around - doorman, front desk, room service, retaurants, shops, even maid service (never saw a cart in the hallways - they must pull into rooms - nice touch!). I had a 16th floor junior suite in Tower 3 and was very pleased - living room area had windows on two sides, allowing view east down 4th towards the race start, and the bay to the North and West. Was great to watch the dog teams starting to arrive and determine when to go down and mingle pre-race. Bedroom was completely separate and of good size with ample closet space and a refrigerator. Bathroom was a bit small (keep in mind this hotel was built in 60's & 70's), but made great use of the space by having full mirrors above the counters on two walls. Can lamp lighting wasn't great for putting on makeup, but with all the windows there was plenty of natural light elsewhere. Deeper than average tub (in separate room with toilet) and waterfall showerhead. Nice heavy terry robes provided. Living room was also good sized, with sofa, armchair, round table with 2 chairs, desk, and built-in dry bar. Room decor looked fairlyy new, in earth tones in keeping with the hotels decor. Some reviewers call in dark, but I like the hotel's character with the dark teak and large public areas and shop promenades. It's kind of a throwback to a different hotel era. I stay in enough generic Hyatt/Marriott/Radisson type hotels to appreciate a different personality. And for all the whiners who complain about no A/C - it's Alaska!! I live in Seattle and most of us don't have A/C! There are ceiling fans in bedroom and living room, and a portable Vortex-type fan in the closet, and some of the windows crank open. If you're visiting during a RARE heat weave, just ask for an east-facing room.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Mar 04 2008 Over rated hotel for the price. Overpriced rooms with lack luster atmospher. No A/C. The pool was way to small and over chlorinated. The food was okay but not even close two a two star level. For a museum or a shrine to the infamous Captain Cook,This place would be a thumbs up! But for a hotel, I will go with the local bed and breakfsst agencies for more attentive care, better quality food.

Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Dec 16 2007 Beautiful hotel, beware no AC The hotel captain cook is a beautiful hotel with great food and a great location. When arriving there on a July day during a warm streak we quickly found out that there is no AC. Most people would shrug that off and say then just open the windows.... there were two problems to that. 1 remember that it is daylight most of the time and only "dusk" from 2am -4am- so you need an eye mask. 2 you are near an inlet, where with the window open you constantly hear seagulls- so you need ear plugs.... I eventually couldn't stand wearing either, closed the windows and slept as best as I could. By the 3rd day I was sleep deprived.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Jul 22 2007 disappointed! A couple of friends and I stayed at the Cook because of its location, the Crow's Nest Bar (great view and drinks) and availability of massages in hotel. We ended up in a junior suite on the busy street side of the hotel (noisy) with a king bed for the three of us. The pull out in the living area had no mattress. It was noticably smaller than other rooms in other hotels (because it is old?) We had requested rollaways which were not set up for us (but once done were very comfortable). The Crow's Nest, with people still waiting to get in was closed down at 10:30PM. We were awakened 8:30AM by room service wanting to clean the room (check out-noon). The room service breakfast we ordered was incorrect (over easy soft eggs instead of scrambled hard) and oh so greasy.
