In 1809, during the Wars of Liberation, four battles took place on this hill between Napoleon's troops and Bavarian forces. The first three left Tyrol victorious and consequently Andreas Hofer, a local innkeeper, earned the status of folk hero in Tyrol. A monument to his bravery stands on the site, next to those of Emperors Karl and Franz Josef, two commemorative chapels and a museum displaying imperial hunting artifacts. A ski jump was installed here for the 1964 Winter Olympics and it has hosted numerous World Cups since.
