The Leopoldsbrunnen (fountain) is a historical monument facing the Stadtcafé on a little square between the palace, the theatre and the Silver Chapel. It stands next to a huge ancient tree, which like the fountain is protected for its historical value. The equestrian statue represents Archduke Leopold V (1619-1632), Prince of Tirol. It is one of the earliest examples of the Courbette (a horse standing on its hind legs) in the region. The figure of Leopold is surrounded by images of sea deities. The originals of these are to be found in the Ferdinandeum Tyrol's regional museum. Although the plastic used to make this did exist in Leopold's lifetime, the monument was only finalised in 1894. It proved a pioneering work for the time.
