Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Sep 13 2009 great location less than great service the waiters act like they are doing you a special favor. its location makes it a worthwhile stop in vancouver. wonderful beach views and nice looking place on the outside.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on May 27 2008 Boy what a surprise I wanted a two room suite and ended up with two separate rooms (one room far below average) attached to a hallway to a slightly better room. This is not what I ordered when I booked my reservation. When I mentioned my dissatisfaction to the staff their response was "fine" do you want to go someplace else. I was extremely disappointed with my stay, in the room and the staff at this hotel.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Mar 02 2008 Unfortunately bed bugs I have stayed at the Sylvia many times. The last three or four times I have returned home with bed bug bites. I looked the bites up on the Internet, and they are definitely bed bugs. I actually love the Sylvia, but the bed bug thing is very discouraging.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Feb 15 2008 I recommend it to almost everyone I've stayed at the Sylvia many times over the past 15 years, and will go back. The location is perfect, they accept pets, and the suites are wonderful for entertaining. (I usually have a dinner party or three while I'm in town.) The bar has a great view!
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Nov 16 2007 Quaint hotel lived up to its reputation. The Sylvia Hotel is a gem. The staff was warm and efficient, yet not overly effusive (which I liked). Although I was situated in the smallest room that the hotel had to offer, it was bigger than many European hotel rooms that I've stayed in. Further, although I didn't have a view of the ocean, my street view was lovely, especially in Autumn. The large bed was extremely comfortable and the room was very clean. In fact, I would say that there was very little difference between some of the Fairmount hotels I've stayed at, and, given a choice I would opt for the Sylvia. The only drawback was that the rooms were not as quiet as I would have liked. However, as my corner of the hotel was occupied with quiet people, the noise was hardly an issue. Moreover The Sylvia's location is excellent. No wonder the hotel has so many repeat visitors.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Oct 09 2007 Awesome Hotel It was a great place to stay! I think this is a very under rated place. It is not moderen in it's decore but that is what makes it so special. Walk right on to the beach, and starbucks is just up the street.I will be going back for sure!
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Oct 06 2007 Disappointed this year I must express my deep disappointment with this establishment where we stayed this year for nine nights in late August. I do so sadly. A year ago we thought highly enough of The Sylvia to want to repeat the pleasant experience we had there. But this year, on our arrival, I was presented with the key to a different suite from the one I had booked! When I voiced my reasonable objection, I was told curtly that they “reserved the right to change our rooms without notification.” I informed them that they reserved nothing of the kind. As a potential guest, having agreed on a particular room or suite, I reserve it, and have a right to expect our agreement to be honoured. Surely a hotel has no more right to change a booked room or suite without consulting the customer than a theatre owner has to change the seat number on the ticket that has been bought. Nevertheless, it was a fait accompli, and my wife and I (who are not young) were forced to accept, or go looking for a place to stay with all our luggage in late August.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Sep 23 2007 terrible service At first we liked the value and location. Then a storm had come in and we wanted to head back home so we would not get caught in the storm. The manager would not let us out of the cost for the second night. Never in all me travels have I had this kind of service. The manager assured us the storm was no big deal. So we stayed another night. Unfortunatly he was very wrong and we were forced to drive home in a blizzard. A drive that would have taken us 3 hours took us 7 hours. We will never go back. Very bad business on their part.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Nov 30 2006 Do not trust them Attempted to make a reservation. Never heard back from them so made areservation at another lodging. The Sylvia then charged us for one night because we did not cancel the reservation that we did not know we had. If you don't receive an answer, assume that you have to cancel. The Sylvia was not willing to adjust our credit card.
