The Batavian Society of the Arts and Sciences was established on this site in 1778. Due to its rapid growth, the building was transformed into a museum in 1862. Among its collections are fine ethnographic and pre-historic items, including china, bronze and gold objects, stone sculptures and textiles that provide an excellent overview of ancient Indonesian culture. The elephant statue in the front yard was a gift from King Chulalongkorn of Siam in 1871. The Indonesian Heritage Society provides free guided tours in various languages. Admission:

Wayang Kulit
Jan 1st, 2009 to Dec 31st, 2009
These traditional puppet shows feature Wayang Kulit, or leather shadow puppets. Typically featuring exaggerated caricatures of the human form, the Wayang Kulit are two-dimensional puppets made of goat or buffalo parchment. The puppets are similar to paper dolls, but sport movable arms. Most of the stories presented are epic in nature and are performed at the National Museum in Jakarta. Abbreviated versions, lasting for about an hour, are presented at the Wayang Museum Fatahillah Square in downtown Jakarta. The National Museum conducts mini shows every Sunday morning.
