This event recreates the race to save the life of the ancient Chinese poet, Qu Yuan, who drowned himself in protest against a corrupt Manchurian government. Attempting to save him, fishermen paddled up the river, playing drums and throwing rice dumplings to distract predators. Today, Singapore sponsors one of the world's largest dragon boat races, attracting top international teams. The races are easily observed from the shore and visitors can also catch colourful dragon dance performances and sample various delicacies of the season - from dumplings to dragon beard candies.
