This stunning, natural wonder has unfortunately spawned quite a mini-industry around its attractions. Ignore the rather unattractive cafes and roadside shops etc. and head straight for the caves themselves. They are quite simply spectacular - the two showcaves, formed in the Ice-Age, are festooned with stalactites and spectacular rock formations. Look out for Cheddar Man, Britain's oldest skeleton and learn all about how our cave-dwelling ancestors lived. The gorge is equally impressive. There's a bus tour, but it really deserves to be walked. The three-mile round walk (including cliff-tops - bring good shoes and be sensible) is sign-posted and offers some stunning scenery, plus Jacob's Ladder - 274 steps leading to an observation tower, from which there are great views over Somerset and even away to the sea. The gorge is actually free - it's part of a National Trust site, so if you're not interested in the caves, don't buy a ticket. Admission: £7.90, conc £5, family £21.50
