Did You Know?

Tunis, both economic and political capital of Tunisia, gathers 20% of the population of the country.

The city is located behind the Tunis Lake, so it doesn’t enjoy direct access to the sea despite its seaside position. However a great part of the metropolitan area runs along the sea, to the north ( La Goulette, Carthage, Sidi Bou Saïd, La Marsa, Gammarth ) and to the south ( vers Hammam Lif ).

Jasmine is one of the emblems of Tunis’ way of life. In the streets or in the coffeehouses, itinerant salesmen offer little bouquets of the white scented flowers, to carry in the arm or behind the ear.

Orientation:

Tunis is located at 36°50' North and 10°14' East. Tunis Lake insulates the city from the Tunis Bay and southern-west salted lake ( Sebket ) Sejoumi as well as northern-east salted lake ( Sebket ) Ariana limit its expansion in both direction. Tunis lies 60 kilometers from Bizerte at the extreme north of the country and 270 kilometers north of Sfax, the second city of the country.
