The region is named for the two major rivers that converge here, the Seine and the Marne. It is one of France's original 83 departments, and was created during the French Revolution in 1790. The population of these once rural farmlands tripled over the second half of the 21st century. Today, it makes up a significant part of the Paris Conurbation.
