Sian Ka'an Wilderness Adventure

start date: 2009-10-20
end date: 2009-12-29

Meaning "where the sky is born", Sian Ka'an is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering more than 1 million acres of coastal jungle. The reserve's savannas, dunes, wetlands, mangroves and lagoons are home to a huge diversity of plants and animals, including more than 350 bird species.

Upon arrival at Sian Ka'an, an experienced biologist will explain life in the reserve before starting your boat expedition through the reserve's wetlands.

Deep in the heart of the wilderness, you'll rediscover the ancient Xlapak temple, one of more than two dozen Mayan sites that have been uncovered in the reserve in various states of ruin. Evidence of habitation dates back at least 2,000 years but most sites uncovered belong to the post-Classic Period, around 1200 AD.

In the Xlapak area, you can enjoy a swim in a freshwater channel through mangroves and savanna. Your guide will identify various vegetation and birds while you enjoy a snack and soft drinks.

Then, hiking through a jungle trail, you'll discover another Mayan archaeological site before arriving at the Cenote Escondido (underground river), where snorkeling and swimming is a must! Finally, enjoy a tasty restaurant lunch before returning to your hotel.

Research is vital to ensuring adequate protection for the countless species of flora and fauna who call the reserve home. The tour operator works in collaboration with environmental experts including the World Wildlife Fund, the Ecotourism Society, the Smithsonian School and other leaders in the field of environmental protection.

Experience the true wonders of nature on this personalized, small group eco tour. (Maximum tour size: 10 people.)
